Lucasfilm Officially Has New Leadership

As rumors for the last six or so months, it is now official. Kathleen Kennedy is no longer president of Lucasfilm. The long time producer was placed in charge of the company after Disney acquired it back in 2012 where she oversaw the relaunch of the franchise to theaters and TV with various levels of success. She will continue to work in the Star Wars universe as producer on current and probably future Star Wars films so to a small degree her previous subordinates will become her bosses. Those new bosses are Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan as co-presidents of Lucasfilm.

Filoni will also keep his role as Chief Creative Officer. Filoni began working on Star Wars after directing 8 episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender. He began work at Lucasfilm in 2005 and from there helped create the animation side of the company with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels and more. He then helped launch live action Star Wars TV with The Mandalorian and Ahsoka and now moving into the movie side where he wrote and directed Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu which hits theaters on May 22, 2026.

Lynwen Brennan was vice-president of Lucasfilm, starting in ILM in 1999, rising through the ranks over the years to General Manager of Lucasfilm in 2015 which is more or less an executive vice president role. Her role in the new company is to handle all the business side work that it takes to manage a company so Filoni is free to work on the creative side.

The eight episode season finished production which stars several characters from the animated "Star Wars: Rebels" series. The series filmed in the UK mostly using the same stages and The Mandalorian series. The first season of Ahsoka aired in 2023. Star Wars: Starfighter Adds Cast, Starts Production

The chances for a Star Wars film making it the big screen has substantially increased as Star Wars: Starfighter begins production. In theory, director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) will be there to the end but no guarantees with Lucasfilm.

With the news comes a photo of star Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray. Also announced was official verification of the casting of Matt Smith and Mia Goth. Announced additional cast members are Amy Adams (Disenchanted), Aaron Pierre (Lanterns), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (Good Grief), and Daniel Ings (The Marvels).

Shawn Levy says, “I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

Details on the script and the characters remain under wraps. The movie is aiming for a May 28, 2027 release date.

New Jedi Order Movie Paused?

An unconfirmed rumor is making the rounds that The New Jedi Order movie with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey is on hold but not cancelled either. The news isn't really a surprise considering the movie has been having script problems with multiple writers removed from the project which suggests Lucasfilm doesn't know what they want, just what they don't want when its presented to them.

Supposedly the pause is to allow for two other Star Wars films still at the idea stage, one from Shawn Levy and another from James Mangold. If that is the case that means this hold will be at least two or more years in length as there is no indication that either film even reached the finished script stage, much less started pre-production.

Modern Star Wars films have consistently had problems with scripts, directors, and schedules and who knows what else that is hidden by NDAs. My general opinion is the mismanagement of Lucasfilm is such that you can't count on one of their films until its at least half way through production. By then they are too financially committed to not see it to completion.

Star Wars: Starfighter Casts Villain Role

It seems Lucasfilm is making progress on one of their many planned Star Wars movies. The current name is Star Wars: Starfighter which will star Ryan Gosling and be directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine). The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Mia Goth (Pearl) as been cast as one of the bad guys attempting to get the person that Gosling's character is protecting.

Mia Goth makes for an interesting choice as her claim to fame is really she isn't that famous except for being the girlfriend of Shia Labouf. Her wheelhouse is usually art house and avante garde films often with a strong sexual component. She does seem to be trying to create a more mainstream (and longer lasting) acting career with roles in Gullermo del Toro's Frankenstein and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

The current rumor is the film is set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker so a post First Order galaxy with a production start date aiming for this fall to hit a May 28, 2027 release date. As with all things involving the Star Wars movies, until they actually complete production, its possible all this could change.

New Star Wars Live Action Series From Lost Creator

With Star Wars: Andor about to end its run in three weeks and The Mandalorian probably done after the upcoming movie, Disney+ seems to want a replacement show. Lucasfilm has tapped Carlton Cuse to come up with that new series along with his son Nick Cuse. Nothing has been revealed about the story, the time table, or anything else.

The pair have a good track record with Carlton Cuse creating series like The Adventures of Brisco County Jr (highly recommend), Lost, Locke & Key, and more. His sone produced Masters of the Air, Watchmen, and others. Basically a whole lot of experience at making TV shows within a budget, something Disney+ is probably very focused on right now after a series of costly Star Wars TV shows that didn't return their investment.

As with anything related to Lucasfilm, there is what they plan to do and there is what they actually do so treat this is just one of many future Star Wars possibilities.
