Thursday as part of the Investor's Day, Disney finally revealed some concrete details about their upcoming Disney+ streaming service that is designed to compete directly with Netflix. Part of this includes bringing out some big guns from their various properties including three Marvel shows and two Star Wars live action shows.
Specifically on the Star Wars front, The Mandalorian will be an 8 episode season and premiere with the service on its first day along with Episode I through VI of Star Wars. For unspecified reasons, the 201X created films will not be available until later.
The other Star Wars show, to premiere at a date date will star Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk as they reprise their Star Wars: Rogue One characters of Cassian and droid K-2SO. The show is described as "thrilling spy series." No other details were provided except that Stephen Schiff (The Americans) will be the showrunner. Other Star Wars programming is in the works including a documentary and another season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars but no release dates on those either.
Details:
- launch date: November 12, 2019 in US, later in other countries
- cost: $69.99 per year or $6.99 per month
- expected to lose over $1 billion in 2020 with more losses each year until 2024 where should become profitable
- might create a discount package with ESPN+ and Hulu
- no commercials
- functionality will include multiple user profiles per account, parental controls, watch list and recommendations similar to Netflix
- Disney films (so Marvel, Pixar, etc) will become available on platform shortly after their home release (so 6 months after theatrical release)
- currently announced platforms for apps include Playstation 4 and Roku with plans for smart TVs and other game consoles.
Programming:
- exclusive streaming home for all seasons of The Simpsons
- Star Wars TV: The Mandalorian will be a launch title, RCassian and K-2SO show
- Marvel TV: WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If? animated series and more with corresponding cast members reprising their roles No other details provided
- Disney older cartoons, programs and classic movies (like Cinderella, Snow White, etc) will be part of the streaming service.
- Pixar: most movies will be on streaming service by end of its first year (so not right away) and rumored to be a Monsters, Inc cartoon in works.
- Other new shows including "The World According to Jeff Goldblum", "Magic of the Animal Kingdom", High School Musical series, and over 50+ more planned
- Movies: will include original movies with Lady and the Tramp live action movie and Noelle (Anna Kendrick as Santa Claus' daughter)
- full details on announced programs here
To mean the main takeaway is if you are a fan of Disney, Marvel, Pixar, or Fox TV stuff or have young children, you are probably going to be forced to subscribe to Disney+. This isn't just because of the volume of new content they have in the works but also access any of the old content from the last 50 or so years. The company is either actively trying to buy out existing contracts (like with Turner for the Star Wars movies) or letting streaming contracts expire (like with Netflix) so that anything they own will probably be under one streaming roof within a few years. On the bright side, compared to Netflix' now relatively expensive $13 price, the $7 monthly price is great. At least until they start raises prices in a few years.
