New Star Wars Trilogy Has Found A Writer

Lucasfilm is looking to make another trilogy of Star Wars films, this time tapping Simon Kinberg (most of the X-Men and Wolverine films) to write and produce the films. No other details have been confirmed. One rumor says its continuing the The Skywalker Saga with episodes 10-12 but another says it will be a completely new saga. Kinberg previously worked on the Star Wwars universe on The Force Awakens and Star Wars Rebels. I think this is the third trilogy rumor in as many years and techinically there are around four other Star Wars films that technically remain possible. End result is considering how difficult a time Lucasfilm has in completing any film project, don't get your hopes up on anything especially since the likeliest earliest release date would be sometime in 2027 and that is being optimistic.

Writer Out for New Jedi Order Movie

Another Star Wars movie writer has hit the eject button. Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is out as writer for Star Wars: New Jedi Order movie that would focus on Rey (Daisy Ridley). He was the replacement for original writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Why he left or was kicked off the project is unknown but its not entirely a surprise as the Star Wars movies seem to go through several writers and directors before reaching the screen, if they don't get outright cancelled first. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is currently still the director of the film which is targeting a December 2026 release date which is becoming more unlikely to achieve.

James Earl Jones 1931 - 2024

The acting world lost a giant on Monday as James Earl Jones died at the age of 93. The actor most famous for being the voice of Darth Vader throughout the character's appearances from the movies to the cartoon for nearly 50 years. He was also just famous for his voice. He voiced Mufasa in The Lion King, performed voices in all kinds of animated cartoons, performed voice overs, called the voice of CNN for their ads and more.

Jones was born on January 17, 1931 in Arkabutla, Mississippi during the Great Depression. While his parents looked for work, he moved to Michigan to live with his grandparents. He attended the University of Michigan where he discovered his love acting. When he graduated in 1955 he began on stage, often in Shakespearean roles. Eventually he moved to New York, working a a janitor to support himself while he studied at the American Theatre Wing. This lead to occasional TV roles and in 1964 he was cast in the acclaimed movie Dr. Strangelove.

His return to stage in 1967 to star in The Great White Hope earned him many fans and a Tony Award for Best Actor In A Play. He continued to work on Broadway with starring roles in The Iceman Cometh, Of Mice and Men and others. Then in 1977 he was cast as the voice of Darth Vader. During the 80s and 90s when not voicing Darth, he would guest on many TV series and work on bunch of movies including Coming To America, The Hunt for Red October, Field of Dreams and more

“Denzel Washington, Sidney Poitier, Robert Redford, Tom Cruise: those guys have well-planned careers,” Jones told The Guardian in 2009. “I’m just on a journey. Wherever I run across a job, I say, ‘OK, I’ll do that.'” To call him an acting legend is underselling his contributions to the arts and pop culture over his long career.

The Acolyte Introduces Sol and Williams' Violin Arrangement

Disney+ continues to post videos in the run-up to the June 4th release of the first two episodes of The Acolyte. The first video is an introduction to Sol (See Lee Jung-jae), one of the Jedi in the series. The second video is a violin performance by series star Amandla Stenberg using a violin arrangment from John Williams for her. The last is a quick vid, probably for Tik Tok, that weirdly is probably the most clear on what at least the first few episodes may be about.

The Acolyte TV Spot Fight Sequence

Here is a new TV spot for The Acolyte coming to Disney+ on June 4. Shows a nice fight sequence with shades of the Matrix that suggests that there might be more Jedi action on this show than use too (aka close to zero). Hopefully part of the plan of having a show set in the High Republic era is can finally see what a powerful Jedi can do as the movies never really showed that off.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire Trailer

In a companion piece to Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, Disney+ has revealed they are releasing Star Wars: Tales of the Empire. All six episodes will release on May 4th aka Star Wars Day. Unconfirmed but this may be the "second" season of Tales of the Jedi that Disney was working on and they decided to give it a new title to reflect the stories chosen.

The season is described as "The animated series journeys into the fearsome Galactic Empire through the eyes of two warriors on divergent paths – set during different eras. After losing everything, young Morgan Elsbeth navigates the expanding Imperial world toward a path of vengeance, while former Jedi Barriss Offee does what she must to survive a rapidly changing galaxy. The choices they make will define their destinies."

Star Wars: The Acolyte Gets Poster, Release Date, and Trailer

Disney+ has revealed the official release date of The Acolyte series as June 4th. The series will take place fifty years before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace during the tail end of what is called the High Republic era.

The official synopsis is "an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems."

Considering the tag line is "In an age of light, a darkness rises", can't help but wonder if events lead to Emperor Palpatine beginning his path to conquering the New Republic. As for other Star Wars series in the works, the unofficial plans is Skeleton Crew is looking at late 2024 release and Andor's second and final season in first half of 2025. Ahsoka season two will and The Mandalorian and Grogu movie are also still aiming for 2026 releases.

The Mandalorian and Grogu movie will begin production in June 2024. New Star Wars Movie, Ahsoka Season 2 Announced

In a bit of unexpected news, Lucasfilm has announced that a new Star Wars film has joined the production slate. Called "The Mandalorian & Grogu", it will be directed by Jon Favreau who created and prolific writer on The Mandalorian TV series. Unlike other announcements, this one actual sounds like a plan is in place with filming expected to start later this year. No release date has been announced but Disney has had an untitled Star Wars film penciled in for December 19, 2025 that this film could take over.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.” Lucasfilm leader Katheleen Kennedy said “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

What this mean for The Mandalorian season 4 is unknown. In theory they could film a season four and the movie this year and hit that year end 2025 release date but really no information was given. My assumption is they will film the movie and decide on continuation of the series after. The other Star Wars movie technically still in the works is New Jedi Order with Daisy Ridley reprising her role of Rey but honestly I will be surprised if that doesn't end up being abandoned considering how poorly setup the post Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker world was setup due to JJ Abrams inability to world build.

In addition to the film, Ahsoka season 2 has begun development so good news for those worried about a renewal. As for when get a chance to watch it, just assume at some point in 2025.
